TRICARE For Life + Medicare Advantage

A way to think through what matters most before adding a Medicare Advantage plan on top of TRICARE For Life.

This tool is for education and conversation, not a recommendation. It reflects general patterns, not a specific plan or a specific person's coverage. The right call always depends on your doctors, your travel patterns, and what you value most — that's what a conversation is for.

What matters more with a bundled plan

On Part B givebacks: these are heavily marketed to veterans, and they're real — but the amount varies by plan and county, not every plan offers one, and it doesn't remove the requirement to carry Part B for TFL. It offsets a cost you're already paying rather than eliminating it. Worth asking about specifically, not assuming.
On prescription drug coverage: TFL already includes creditable drug coverage, so the Medicare Advantage plans built for TRICARE beneficiaries typically leave Part D out rather than bundling it in. That's standard, not something to watch out for — one less thing to untangle.

Which type is it — HMO or PPO?

Fair — most people don't know this distinction going in. It's one of the first things worth asking about.

Referrals usually required, and care outside the network typically isn't covered at all. This is where TRICARE has the least left to wrap around.

More flexibility to go outside the network, usually at a higher cost-share. TRICARE has more to wrap around than with an HMO.
